Even though I’ve had my Twitter account for more than a year now, I’ve only started using it a month or so ago. When I eventually decided that Twitter will replace Jaiku as my online status-update service, I instantly felt the need to link it to my Facebook Status which I never bother to update manually. This is something I had set up previously with Jaiku, but the problem was that ALL my Jaiku updates were sent to Facebook, which meant that my friends were swamped by sentences like “reviewing a new accelerometer game” or “wish there was a way to activate Wordpress shortcuts on my Macbook”, ie. things they didn’t really care about.
This problem was solved with Twitter as there is a Facebook application entitled “Selective Twitter Status“. I installed this application to my Facebook account, instead of the official Twitter application that sends all status updates regardless, and I gave it the permissions it needed and linked it to my Twitter account.
Now all that I need to do in order to update my Facebook status within Twitter is simply end my tweet with #fb. If my tweet is ended with #fb, Selective Twitter Status will pick it up (without the hashtag) and apply it as my current Facebook status. If my tweet doesn’t end with the hashtag, it’ll remain only as a tweet and my Facebook status won’t be changed. Simple, but effective. Here’s the image from the official application page:

Great post Rita, very clear and precise as always
Have you tried using http://ping.fm/ ? It’s what I use for updating Twitter and Facebook (and others) separately from the one interface.
Been using the standard facebook twitter app and getting comments from mates like “what’s twitter? What’s gravity? And shut up about your bloody phone!”
This looks like the perfect solution!
Thanks.
Wayne, I had the same problem with updates from Jaiku, my friends were telling me that the positive part was that they always knew what I was up to, except that they didn’t *really* understand what I was up to. This application solves my problem easily, and now I can update facebook and twitter from my phone using Gravity
Jim, I’ve heard about ping.fm and I know that many people consider it really valuable, but 1. there’s no mobile client and 2. i don’t really need another login/password and another service to add to the ones I already use. I’ve found this solution as simple and effective for my average use.
